The challenge: fragmented food intake data in care Food intake data in care settings remain fragmented and inconsistently captured, limiting nutritional care and food waste reduction. FINE builds a structured, FAIR-oriented data ecosystem using AI and computer vision to automatically capture individual food intake and plate waste, ethically linked to existing food and health data sources. Practice-driven, multi-actor approach A practice-driven, multi-actor approach combining stakeholder analysis, co-creation workshops and iterative monitoring development. An objective FAIR data scan and attention to ethical, legal and organisational aspects lower adoption barriers and build data awareness. Concrete tools, guidelines and lessons learned • Food intake capture: AI & computer vision system for automated plate and waste monitoring at individual level in care contexts. • Data interoperability: Guidelines on linking food intake data to existing food and health data sources securely and ethically. • Governance framework: Recommendations on data governance, consent, and organisational roles to enable trustworthy data reuse. • FAIR data scan: Practical scan tool to assess and improve the FAIRness of food and health data sources. Added value at the intersection of food, health and care Structured data reuse supports personalised nutritional care, food waste prevention and value-based healthcare. FINE contributes reusable infrastructure aligned with the ambitions of Data4Food2030 and a broader European health data space. Expertise, tools and a replicable model FINE offers a validated, practice-tested approach to building food intake data ecosystems, including the monitoring set-up, FAIR scan methodology, governance templates, and co-creation process, ready to be adapted and scaled to new care and food contexts. Partners and conditions for scaling • Data platform owners ready to open or interlink health and food data in a FAIR and governed way. • European consortium partners — we are actively looking for research institutes, companies and care organisations across the EU to jointly submit proposals under Horizon Europe calls, in domains such as food systems, digital health, data spaces and value-based care.
